The amazing new Google car actually drives itself. On Saturday the world’s favorite search engine revealed that they were secretly testing an automated car.
Google Car is Specially Outfitted Toyota Prius
Google’s test car is a Toyota Prius that has been outfitted with a cylinder on the roof, and the car uses AI software. Using these tools along with video cameras, radar sensors and laser range finders, the Google car actually senses things on the road and responds to them as a human would respond.
Google Car Only had 1 Accident in Tousands of Test Miles
Amazingly, there were seven test cars that drove over 1,000 miles with absolutely no human intervention. Wow! There were also 140-thousand miles driven with some human control. There was one small accident – one Google car was rear-ended while stopped at a traffic (Get 10000 free hits) light. Cars that drive themselves are an amazing concept, and hopefully these types of cars will actually end up making the road safer. If they are successful, they could allow for people to ride in cars while getting other stuff done, and they could help reduce deaths from texting and talking while driving.
Google estimates that its new car could save nearly half of the 1.2 million lives lost on the roads every year. The hope is that the cars would encourage car polling as well as save fuel in addition to preventing accidents. The video below shows the Google car in action., What do you think? Would you be willing to use an automated car in the future?
